An InterviewOur PresidentwithA New Start for Rion as a Technology-Driven CompanyKiyokatsu Iwahashi, President and CEOPreface: A Message from Our PresidentI, Kiyokatsu Iwahashi, assumed the position of President at Rion in April 2022.I was probably named to be the new president based on my experience working in the develop-ment division. I think my seniors and all employees at the company wanted a reboot for Rion, which over the course of its existence has evolved as a technology-driven company. We live in an age in which technological innovation is underway in every corner of the world. We can-not expect to continue evolving simply by rework-ing technologies developed by our predecessors here in Kokubunji.Throughout Rion’s long history, spanning 78 years since its founding, our company has contributed to society through technology. In this era of change, my aspiration for Rion is to shape it into a company fully worthy of its heritage as a technology-driven company.I am resolved to assume the great responsibility of being president of this company with a sense of de-light in taking on this challenge.I believe people represent the essential force that drives a company to carry on long into the future. In these times, people choose what company they want to work for, not the other way around. For this reason, I believe it is more important than ever be-fore for people to understand Rion so that our com-pany can continue to build a talented work force.I would also like to convey to as many customers as possible, and to others associated with our compa-ny, a clearer sense of the qualities that give Rion its appeal. This will require an energetic communication of Rion’s technologies and its potential as a company from various perspectives. The RION Technical Journal is a tool intended to fulll this role.We hope the journal will continue to find many readers and help them discover various aspects of Rion.Izumi Zamami of the Editorial Committee interviews the president to nd out about some of the things employees are curious about.“Mr. Iwahashi, what do you think is Rion’s strongest appeal?”(Zamami) What do you want to communicate through the RION Technical Journal?(Iwahashi) Mainly how Rion became the company it is today throughout its history and up to the present and what it intends to do in the future. I think it’s important to communicate this informa-tion. I also believe communicating information through a magazine like this is important for a company in strengthening public awareness of its social responsibilities and in main-taining long-term relationships with customers. I also believe this maga-zine can convey not just the essence of our technologies, but the appeal of various aspects of Rion. That should prompt interest in the company across a wide cross section of the public.(Zamami) What would you say is Rion’s strongest appeal?(Iwahashi) I would say our serious approach to our work. Our strongest appeal is that all of our employees are sincere and serious in almost every aspect, whether in interactions with our customers, internal operations, compliance with company rules, or quality control. I do have some concerns that this tendency might make them more cautious or conservative than necessary. I want to ask more of them. I want to see them show a little more passion for taking on challeng-es or taking an aggressive approach in today’s world of intensifying competition and globaliza-tion across many fields.(Zamami) What are your expectations of employ-ees?(Iwahashi) I want them to be healthy, happy, and cheerful. I want them to remain self-motivated in their work. And with that mindset, I want them to create a workplace filled with good humor and smiles. Of course, my own efforts are essential to making this happen.(Zamami) Last but not least, can you tell us about the direction Rion plans to take in the future?(Iwahashi) Our management philosophy is sanpo yoshi (good for all three parties): good for the seller, good for the buyer, and good for the world. When our customers become prosperous and satisfied, we are happy, too. And when we be-come prosperous, we can bring more prosperity to our customers. If this cycle of sanpo yoshi management takes firm root in Rion, our com-pany will be able to keep pace with the changes in this world and earn a strong reputation with the public. I want to make Rion a company that will thrive well into the future by establish-ing this cycle. That’s my idea of an ideal company.
